089: When You Can’t Stop Dieting (even though you hate it) & Need a Good Reason To Leave It Behind - Christy Harrison

Christy Harrison - High-Res.jpg

The roots of diet culture run so much deeper than you’ve ever known. It’s a social construct that was created almost 200 years ago as a means for the white middle class to assert dominance over women, people of colour, and people in larger bodies. This long-standing diet culture has glorified thinness and perpetuated the harmful weight stigma that exists and flourishes today. As a result, people are encouraged to obsess over how to achieve the “right” weight rather than turning inwards, unlearning diet culture, and learning to reclaim their happiness.

In this episode, you’ll learn about the surprising (and angering) roots of diet culture and how to say goodbye to it once and for all. You’ll also understand how to experience a sense of wellbeing from a non-diet perspective and learn what truly determines our state and quality of health (hint: it’s now what you eat!).

Tune into episode #89:

In this episode, Christy and I discuss:

  • The shocking (read: racist and misogynistic) roots of diet culture

  • How we can start to unlearn the narratives and ideologies diet culture has embedded in us

  • The ways in which diet culture robs us of various aspects of life, including our time, money, wellbeing, and happiness

  • The parallels between diet culture and the wellness movement

  • What weight stigma is and how someone in a larger body can protect themselves against this stigma

  • How food sensitivities might disappear once you heal your relationship with food

  • How to determine if you’re engaging in healthy habits or disordered eating habits

  • What percentage of our state of health is determined by what we eat

  • How to start reclaiming your happiness by having a more open relationship with food
