How To Start Your Own Mastermind

Last week was jam-packed for me on the being-coached side of things (in the BEST way possible):

  • I had a 3 hour Hot Seat Coaching Session with my Coach, Sarah Jenks (we each had 20 minutes to be in the hot seat, then would listen in on each other being coached – SUPER impactful)

  • I had a 1 hour call with my Weekly Mastermind group (we meet weekly on Wednesdays for 1 hour and have been doing so for a year).

  • We had Xanthe Appleyard of @ohsierracreative join us in The Well to coach us all on How To Show Up Sustainably Online

  • I had a 1:1 Call with another industry leader, Matt Gray, Founder of Herb and Founder OS

In other words, I'm feeling INSPIRED and LIT THE FRICK UP to take action towards my goals and dreams (!!!!)

I can remember a time where I didn't have this level of support in my life and business at all. It's no wonder I felt:

- Lonely
- Lost
- Spinning in circles

Now, between the online and IRL communities I'm in, I'm surrounded by like-minded people who are going after big things in life almost 24/7, which means, instead of feeling lonely and lost, I'm feeling ACTIVATED and INSPIRED

This has been critical for my personal and professional growth, and also my mental well-being, and I want to share with you how you can get this kind of support too by starting your own Mastermind.

How To Start Your Own Mastermind

What is a Mastermind?

A Mastermind is a group of like-minded people / professionals who gather regularly to get peer-support, brainstorm ideas and create accountability. The idea is that "more minds are better than one", which collapses time and helps you to arrive at a point of clarity or your answer much sooner than you would have on your own otherwise.

1. Think of who would be a good fit for your Mastermind

Think of 2-3 people who have a growth-mindset and would be interested in meeting weekly to work towards specific goals. It's not important that these people are in the same industry as you, or at the same level of business as you. That said, they should be people that inspire you, have a diverse skillset and people you'd like to learn from.

It's also not important that you have a pre-existing relationship with these people, though it will certainly help in the initial ask if you do.

2. Put out the ask

If you have an existing relationship with these people already, it's as simple as asking the question:

"Hey! I'm starting a Mastermind with 3-4 other people who are interested in meeting weekly for 1 hour to offer peer-support and advice as we work towards personal and professional goals. Are you interested in joining?"

If you don't have an existing relationship with the people you're thinking of, you can use the same script above, but I would recommend adding a personal introduction that explains why you, specifically, are reaching out to them.

If you are in an online community already (or The Well 😉), you can also put out the ask in the form of a post in your private online community.

3. Create the Structure

Pre-decide a time and day of the week to meet weekly, or bi-weekly (i.e. Wednesdays at 4pm EST for 1 hour). This appointment should be treated with the same level of commitment that you bring to any other professional meeting. Make sure it's a time and date everyone can stick to on a weekly basis.

Decide the actual structure of the call as well. My recommendation is to kick off the call with a round of wins (i.e. everyone shares something awesome that happened in that week for 2 minutes each) and then go into the question + advice portion of the call for anywhere from 8-9 minutes each (this will depend on how long your call is and how many people are on the call).

4. Nominate a "Host" of the Mastermind

The host will manage the calendar invite and will also be responsible for taking the lead during each of the calls (i.e. keeping time, letting people know when they've reached their time, keeping the flow of the call).

And YES, timing is important. No hard feelings here, just making the most of everyone's time. If you want to have a chatty Cathy catch up, schedule another meeting for that ;).

5. The Q&A Portion

When it's your turn to speak, be as specific as possible with your question, providing only necessary context. The rest of the time is for the members of the mastermind to provide input and advice (this is done popcorn style – whoever feels called to speak can raise their hand, or speak up).

6. Walk away feeling INSPIRED + ACTIVATED

I can't tell you the amount of times my Mastermind members and I have hopped on a call crying or feeling defeated, and then by the end of it, we're practically skipping away feeling on top of the world!
