The Ultimate Resource For Intuitive Eating

RM_IntuitiveEatingResource

Various media outlets have declared Intuitive Eating as one of the top trends of 2020 that could possibly be here to stay – and let me tell you, I am HERE. FOR. IT.

I will say though, I do find it a bit funny that Intuitive Eating is being coined as a “trend” considering we were all born intuitive eaters. We all once knew how to eat when we were hungry, stop when we were full and gravitate towards the foods that fuel our body best. That was, until we were thrown into the world of diet culture that tells us to eat this, that, be keto, no wait – paleo, no, no wait – vegan?!

Regardless, we are here and now and more people are seeing the endless benefits of straying from diet culture and going back to their roots as intuitive eaters. Since there is still a lot of confusion around intuitive eating, including it’s misperception as being the “eat whatever the heck you want, when you want” diet, I wanted to put together the ultimate resource for you to learn more about intuitive eater, whether you happen to be entirely new to the concept or you’re already on your intuitive eating journey.

What Is Intuitive Eating?

Intuitive Eating honours the inner wisdom of the body, which has been proven to be one of the most effective methods of promoting a healthy way of living by fostering a healthy relationship with food and body. It suggests that eating when you’re hungry, stopping when you’re full and enjoying the foods that you desire, while checking in as to how they make you feel, is one of the best ways to live healthily.

Intuitive Eating sounds simple, because we already have the answers within us, but for many who have been immersed in diet culture for years (or decades) on end, it can be very difficult as diet culture has taught people that they cannot trust their bodies. The intuitive eating process also requires learning how to differentiate between physical and emotional hunger.

The Intuitive Eating process is made up of 10 principles coined by Evelyn Tribole & Elyse Resch:

  1. Reject the diet mentality

  2. Honour your hunger

  3. Make peace with food

  4. Challenge the food police

  5. Respect your fullness

  6. Discover the satisfaction factor

  7. Honour your feelings without using food

  8. Respect your body

  9. Exercise – feel the difference

  10. Honour your health through gentle nutrition

Who Can Benefit From Intuitive Eating

Literally, anyone and everyone! But especially those who are chronic dieting, constantly in pursuit of weight loss, frequently starting fresh tomorrow or Monday and don’t have a great relationship with food (which you’ll know to be true if you feel fearful of specific foods and feel like food and your body are trying to sabotage you).

I will say that intuitive eating might look a bit different for those that are managing a chronic illness or disease, or food sensitivities, in which case, I have some recommendations for you over here.
